Earrings for sensitive ears — what actually helps

Most earring reactions are to nickel, which is common in base-metal alloys. The materials that reliably help are implant-grade titanium, niobium, surgical steel and solid gold above 14k. Plated fashion jewellery — including everything Kuzooo sells — is alloy underneath, so it cannot honestly be described as hypoallergenic.

An honest note first

Kuzooo's pieces are plated alloy. We do not test for nickel content and we do not describe anything in this catalogue as hypoallergenic or nickel-free, because we cannot substantiate either claim. If you react to fashion jewellery, this guide is written to help you rather than to sell to you.

That matters practically. Plenty of jewellery is marketed as hypoallergenic with nothing behind the word — it is not a regulated term in India or most other markets.

What is actually happening

Contact dermatitis from earrings is usually an allergy to nickel, which is present in many base-metal alloys and in some stainless steels. The reaction is itching, redness, sometimes weeping around the piercing, and it typically appears hours after putting the earring in rather than immediately.

Plating complicates it. A newly plated earring may cause no reaction at all, because the gold layer separates the alloy from skin. As that layer wears through at the post — the part in constant contact with the piercing — the alloy is exposed and the reaction starts. People often describe this as an earring they used to be fine with.

Materials that genuinely help

Implant-grade titanium is the most reliable, followed by niobium. Surgical steel helps many people but does contain some nickel, so it is not universally safe. Solid gold at 14k or above is generally well tolerated; lower karats contain more alloy and are less predictable.

One practical middle path: keep a set of titanium or niobium posts and wear fashion earrings only for the hours of an event, removing them afterwards. Duration of contact matters as much as material.

What does not work

Clear nail polish on the post is a widely repeated tip and a poor one. It chips within hours, it is not designed for skin contact, and it gives false confidence. If you are genuinely nickel-sensitive, the answer is a different post material, not a coating.

Common questions

Is gold-plated jewellery safe for sensitive ears?
Sometimes, and unpredictably. While the plating is intact it separates the alloy from skin. As the plating wears at the post, the base metal is exposed. If you know you are nickel-sensitive, plated jewellery is not a dependable answer.
Are Kuzooo's earrings nickel-free?
We do not know, and we will not claim it. The pieces are plated alloy and we have no nickel testing to support a nickel-free or hypoallergenic claim. If you have a diagnosed nickel allergy, choose titanium or niobium posts.
